Can I have two routers in the same house?

I currently have the router/modem downstairs and won't be able to bring it upstairs to have a wired connection for my desktop and Xbox. I have tried using net gear power line but something about the wiring gives me a worse connection than wireless connection. What will I have to do? if I have one router upstairs and one downstairs without using a cord across the house?

In this case you can use wifi repeater and at the first time you need to configure it by connecting through a LAN and desktop PC and just select options appropriately like wifi repeat or if you connect DSL line to the wifi repeater it will act as a router and then it can be connected to multiple devices one more thing here is you can't connect it to desktop or laptop through LAN because it have only one RJ45 port.

Now a days wifi repeaters are very useful if you have 2.5 GHz antenna to your router and it helps to spread the wifi signals.
